It's Severe Weather Awareness Week in Kansas, and families are encouraged to plan ahead for weather related emergencies. Families with children should be especially prepared to make sure everyone knows what to do during an emergency.

One of the most important things children need to know during a weather emergency is where it is safe to be. For tornadoes, a basement is the first thought, but not every home has one. Make sure kids know where the safest place to be is, whether it's an interior closet, bathroom, storm shelter or even a cellar.

It's also important that families have a plan for weather emergencies. Just as important, families need to practice their plan. Children can be frightened during severe weather, but practice will keep them calm and make sure everyone knows what to do.
