Kansas Senator Pat Roberts introduces food stamp reform bill
Kansas Senator Pat Roberts is co-sponsoring a bill to make reforms in the federal food stamp program, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Roberts says the food stamp program is exempt from sequestration. He said the bill will make common sense reforms that will save the federal government $36 billion over 10 years. He said it will restore integrity to the program, and will not affect food on the table for families that need it.
Roberts said the bill will prohibit lottery winners from receiving food stamps. The bill would eliminate duplicate employment and training programs, bonuses paid to states for signing up as many people as possible for SNAP and a loophole that offers heating and energy assistance in order to boost SNAP participation and benefit levels.
