Police search southwest Wichita lake after early morning chase
Wichita Police have resumed search operations with boats at a southwest Wichita lake as they look for a man who ran from a car after a chase early Friday morning.
Officers tried to stop a car for a traffic violation in the area of 31st Street South and Hiram around 2 a.m., but the car sped away and crashed through a fence at a sand pit at 35th and Gold. The driver jumped out and ran into a lake and disappeared. Police took two people from the car into custody.
The search was suspended until daylight, and then rescue crews moved in and began searching the lake. There were indications shortly after 9 a.m. that a body was found in the pond.
Police Captain Max Tenbrook says fire and rescue crews were called to the lake to begin a search, but it was suspended because of darkness. He said the driver was facing traffic charges from the pursuit.
It was not immediately known if there might be another reason why the man was running from officers. Tenbrook said the other two people from the car were questioned by officers, but they were not facing any charges at this point.
