Large copper thefts reported
A Mount Hope business that sells agricultural equipment lost an estimated $39,000 in merchandise in a burglary.
The theft at 10400 North 247th Street West took place some time between 8 p.m. March 7 and 7 a.m. March 8. Someone stole 1,300 feet of copper wire and a red Polaris all-terrain vehicle.
Sedgwick County Sheriff's Lt. David Mattingly says the wire alone was worth about $35,000.
"It was five bundles of 20-gauge wire and it's more like a phone cable where there's 11 small wires in each cable," Mattingly said.
In a separate incident, a homeowner who lives in the 8800 block of South Hillside lost a spool of copper wire worth an estimated $5,650. That theft took place between 10:30 p.m. March 6 and 8 a.m. March 7. The homeowner discovered the crime when he noticed damage to an outdoor shed.
