Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer and city council members got a tour Thursday of the construction site for the new terminal building at Mid-Continent Airport.

The steel frame is up for a portion of the terminal building, and work is also being done on a basement area. Resident engineer Jim Armour told the council the work is ahead of schedule and within the budget. The $160 million terminal is being constructed just west of the current terminal building, which was built in 1954.

Vice Mayor Janet Miller and council members Lavonta Williams, James Clendenin and Jeff Longwell were present for the tour, along with city manager Robert Layton and director of airports Victor White.

Longwell said it will be easier for passengers to board aircraft, with a distance that is 55 percent shorter from the ticket counter to the boarding area than the existing terminal. He said the project for the new terminal was instrumental in bringing Southwest Airlines to Wichita to begin providing service in June.

The new terminal should be open in early 2015.
