Fire destroys Winfield park playground
A late night fire destroyed a park playground in Winfield on Thursday, and investigators believe the cause is suspicious.
The fire was reported around 10 p.m. at the Island Park playground. Our news partners at KWCH Channel 12 report the park was fully engulfed in flames when the first crews arrived. Nearby residents reported seeing the flames going dozens of feet into the air. It took firefighters about three hours to bring the blaze under control.
The playground was destroyed by fire in 2008, and it was rebuilt the following year. A 17-year-old boy was convicted in that fire, and he was sentenced to probation and community service. Two other teenagers were charged with obstruction.
