Seven Marines from a North Carolina unit are dead, and several others have been hurt in a training accident at a military depot in western Nevada.

The facility is a storage site for munitions, and an important training facility for special forces headed overseas. Officials say the cause of last night's accident at the Hawthorne Army Depot is under investigation. The Corps says in a statement that the accident last night also injured several with the 2nd Marine Division.

The Hawthorne Army Depot stores and disposes of ammunition. The facility is made up of hundreds of buildings spread over more than 230 square miles. In Washington, Army spokesman George Wright says he has not heard details on the explosion.
