Wichita City Council members on Tuesday gave their tentative approval to a plan for the city to move forward with its housing services amid decreased funding from the federal government.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has told the city to plan on a 5 percent cut in funding. The council's vote was 5-0, with Pete Meitzner and Mayor Carl Brewer absent on other business.

The plan covers city budget costs in 2013 and 2014.

Some of the cuts include help for first-time homebuyers and projects that deal with broken-down and condemned properties.

The public will have 30 days to look over the plan and comment before the city council gives its final approval, which is expected to take place on May 7.
