A Sedgwick County Jail inmate is facing one count each of battery and aggravated battery after he attacked a deputy during dinner.

The 19-year-old inmate grabbed an extra tray in the meal line Monday night. The deputy asked him to put it back. He did, but the inmate did not listen when the deputy later asked him to return to his cell.

"The inmate initially refused, then picked up his tray and a cup of juice and walked to the bottom of the stairwell," said Lt. Dave Mattingly. "Next, the inmate threw the cup of juice in the deputy's face and began to strike the deputy in the head with the food tray."

Other deputies helped get the inmate in handcuffs. Both the deputy and inmate were treated for cuts and scrapes.
