The U.S. Highway 166 bridge over the Arkansas River is closing Monday, but a detour is already in place.

The City of Arkansas City stated a detour will leave U.S. 166 west of Ark City at South Haven. Trucks and heavy traffic can follow the detour north on U.S. 81 to Wellington, east on U.S. 160 to Winfield, then south on U.S. 77 to Ark City.

Local traffic can follow shorter detours.

“The next traversable bridge north of Madison Avenue is the bridge to Geuda Springs on Cowley 10, located about 10 miles northwest of Arkansas City,” the city stated. “Cowley 10, also known as 252nd Road, can be accessed from either 61st Road or directly from U.S. 77, just north of Arkansas City. Continue westbound past the intersection with 15th Road, and the road will curve south to cross the bridge and river.

“Vehicles then can turn south through Geuda Springs on First Road/Geuda Springs Road, which also doubles as the Cowley-Sumner County Line, and continue south until rejoining U.S. 166.”
