A development group is planning to convert a former Wichita fire station into a space for start-up businesses and entrepreneurs, with a coffee shop on the ground floor.

The city council has approved an agreement with a group called FIREWORX, LLC for the sale and development of the former fire station at 500 South Topeka.   Mark Elder with the city’s office of economic development said the building will be turned into commercial space, and it will provide activity that will connect with the nearby Commerce Street arts district and events at Intrust Bank Arena.   Elder said the developers have also been talking with surrounding property owners about a plan for future development of that area.

FIREWORX will invest at least $750,000 in the project, and it is purchasing the building from the city for $100,000.
