Bomb threats reported in Wichita, other cities

Officials in Wichita are investigating a series of bomb threats, through phone calls and emails, and there were also reports of a bomb threat at a plant in Great Bend.   Similar threats have been reported across the country.

ABC reported that the threats are demanding bitcoin payments, but police have determined the threats are not credible.

Wichita police are reporting eight threats that were made via email to different businesses throughout the city.  They were determined to be unfounded.

A threat was also called in to Sunflower Diversified Services in Great Bend, and three of its facilities were evacuated.  An email bomb threat was also reported at the Hillsboro Community Hospital in Marion County.   A Kansas Highway Patrol unit was sent to check the hospital after the building was evacuated.

There are indications that the threats are coming from overseas.

FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS:

Authorities say bomb threats sent to dozens of schools, universities and other locations across the U.S. appear to be a hoax.

The New York City Police Department said the threats sent Thursday were meant to cause disruption and compel recipients into sending money and are not considered credible.

Some of the emails had the subject line: “Think Twice.”

The Palm Beach County, Florida sheriff’s office and the Boise, Idaho police said they had no reason to believe that threats made to locations in those areas were credible.

Across the country, some schools were closed early and others were evacuated because of the threats. Penn State University noticed students via a campus alert. Near Atlanta, people were ushered out of a courthouse.

Threats were also reported in Atlanta, New Orleans and in Anchorage, Alaska.
