Strong winds raise fire danger across Kansas

Strong winds are pushing through Kansas today.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., a high wind warning will be in place for Reno, Kingman, and Harper counties. The National Weather Service expects sustained winds up to 40-mph, with gusts up to 50.

Sedgwick, Harvey, Sumner, Butler, and Cowley counties will be under a wind advisory from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gusts up to 45-mph are expected.

The National Weather Service warns the fire danger is very high today, across all of central and south-central Kansas. You’re asked to postpone any outdoor burning, and drivers are asked to properly dispose of cigarette butts. Tossed cigarettes have been identified as one of the biggest causes of grass fires in Wichita, and have led to large fires in the past.

In west Wichita, fire crews were called to a grass fire around 8:30 this morning, near I-235 and West.

Friday will also be windy, but sustained winds and gusts should stay below what we are seeing today.
