Seven candidates file for vacant Wichita city council seat

Seven candidates have filed for a vacant seat on the Wichita city council, and the candidates will be interviewed next week.

District two council member Pete Meitzner was elected in November to the District 1 seat on the Sedgwick County Commission, and he will be stepping down from his council seat in January.

Candidates had to submit petitions with at least 100 signatures of qualified electors from the second district in northeast Wichita.

The seven candidates who filed successful petitions include former Goddard mayor Marcey Gregory and YMCA director of community development Becky Tuttle.  Other candidates are David Babich, Tyler Cooper, Alex Meitzner, Daniel Rutherford, and Charles Schmidt.

The district two advisory board will conduct interviews with the candidates on Monday, December 17th at 6:30 p.m. at the Rockwell Branch Library at 5939 East 9th Street.  The board can submit up to five names for consideration at the January 8th city council meeting.   A majority council vote will determine who will serve as an interim district two council member until the seat is permanently filled in the November 5th, 2019 election.
