Shooting reported outside Oak Park Mall in Overland Park

Overland Park Police responded to a shooting report at the Oak Park Mall Wednesday night.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. at the mall, located near Interstate 35.  The shooting was originally reported to be inside the mall near the food court and the building was locked down.

Customers were kept inside of stores while police investigated.  Overland Park Police, assisted by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Lenexa Police, discovered the shooting did not take place inside the mall as originally reported,.

Instead, they found an unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot that had been hit by gun fire.  The lockdown was lifted at 9:30 p.m.

Overland Park Police say no one has reported being injured and no one has turned up at local hospitals with gunshot wounds.  They are still investigating what happened and will review security footage.

The mall reopened at 10 a.m. Thursday.
