2019 to begin with bitter cold temperatures and wind chills in Kansas

Temperatures will be dropping into the teens across Kansas for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day celebrations.   Gusty north winds will create wind chills in the single digits for central and south central Kansas, and they will range from -5 to -10 for western Kansas.  Wind chill advisories are in effect for western areas of the state into Tuesday.

People who will be outdoors are urged to dress in layers and wear gloves and hats.   The Kansas Adjutant General’s office says people who are traveling should make sure their vehicle has a full tank of gas and they should also have an emergency kit with food, water, extra clothes and blankets, as well as flashlights, jumper cables and a first aid kit.

People should keep dogs and cats indoors, but if that’s not possible they should be in a garage or they should have a shelter with food and water.

People should also take steps to make sure their home’s water pipes don’t freeze.

The Kansas Turnpike Authority issued a warning for icy conditions Monday evening along I-135 and I-35 into northeastern Kansas,  because of the possibility of a few flurries and light freezing drizzle.
