New Year ‘celebratory gunfire’ injures several across the US

Around the New Year holiday, police issue reminders that it’s illegal to shoot a gun in the air. Lawrence Police tweeted Monday that celebratory and non-celebratory gun shooting is illegal.

Despite those warnings, several people across the country were hurt by gunfire believed to be celebratory, including a few children and a man in Kansas.

News outlets in Atlanta, Georgia report a 9-year-old boy was struck by gunfire. A 6-year-old girl was reportedly struck in California, and stray bullets struck adults in North Carolina and in Tennessee.

Kansas City authorities say a man was about to try to fire a gun into the air to celebrate the new year, but he accidentally shot himself. Police Chief Terry Zeigler tweeted the man was getting ready to go out at midnight and fire his .22-caliber handgun, but accidentally shot himself in the stomach when he sat the gun down on a couch. He’s expected to be okay.

The injuries in the other states are believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.
