WIC program continues to run despite government shutdown

The partial shutdown of the federal government has lasted almost two weeks, but Kansas health officials say there has been no impact on a nutrition program for women and children.

The Women, Infants and Children program serves low-income pregnant women, infants and children from birth to age 5.   It has 120 county clinics across Kansas and there are 350 stores that are continuing to process WIC transactions.

Dave Thomason is the director of nutrition and WIC services for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and he told KFDI News that there have been no delays or slowdowns in the program.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture has provided enough funds to run through the end of January, and Thomason said more funding will be provided this week to extend the program into February.

Thomason said WIC is open and operational and people in the program will continue to receive services.
