Formal charges have been filed against a Wichita man accused of kicking a one-year-old boy and yelling racial slurs.

31-year-old Trace Riff made his first appearance in Sedgwick County district court on Monday.  He is charged with attempted aggravated battery, two counts of disorderly conduct and interference with a law enforcement officer.   He is also charged with unlawful abuse of toxic vapors and possession of methamphetamine in a separate case.

Riff was arrested December 23rd at a Dillons store at Douglas and Hillside.  He was accused of kicking a child and yelling racial slurs, and information was turned over to the FBI for an investigation of a possible hate crime in connection with the incident.

Riff was arrested on December 22nd on a drug-charge and then was taken into custody again on January 3rd on the methamphetamine charge.

Riff is being held on a bond of $50,000 and his next court appearance will be January 24th.
