Two Sedgwick County commissioners were honored by friends and colleagues during their last regular meeting Wednesday.
Dave Unruh is leaving office after four terms as the District 1 commissioner, serving as chairman five times. He expressed thanks to family and county staff for their help and support during his time in office. He said the county continues to face challenges and needs to stay focused on jobs, education, public safety, mental health needs, and quality of life. He said despite politics at the state and national level, local governments have always been in position to make a direct impact on people’s lives and he’s proud of the employees who have worked to make Sedgwick County successful.
Richard Ranzau is completing two terms in District 4, and he also thanked family, friends, supporters and county staff. He talked about the times he has been a dissenting vote on key issues, but he pointed out that he voted with other commissioners 95 to 98 percent of the time. He said sometimes there are differences of opinion, and different voices are needed with a vigorous debate on important issues for the health of the republic. Ranzau said he is proud to stand true to his values, and he has always tried to fight for the taxpayer.
Two new commissioners will be sworn into office on Sunday. Republican Pete Meitzner will take office in District 1, and Democrat Lacey Cruse will begin her term in District 4.
