With fluctuating temperatures throughout the winter months, AAA wants homeowners to take precautions to prevent frozen or burst water pipes. To prevent your pipes from freezing, you can take some simple steps, including:

  • Make sure everyone in the home knows where the water shut-off valve is and how it works.
  • Seal gaps around pipes that allow cold air inside.
  • Disconnect garden hoses and insulate outside faucets.
  • Open cabinet doors to allow heat to reach pipes located under sinks.

If you do turn on your water and nothing comes out, it is likely that your pipes are frozen. “Both plastic and copper pipes can burst,” said Alex Greig, Regional Insurance Director for AAA Kansas. “A crack as small as 1/8-inch can spew up to 250 gallons of water per day, cause flooding, serious structural damage, and the potential for mold.” To prevent pipes from bursting you should turn off the water immediately and call a plumber for help. You can also try to thaw the pipe with a hair dryer, but do not do so if you are in standing water.

If you are unable to prevent a break in your pipes, call your insurance company immediately, clean up whatever water you can, take pictures, and create a list of damaged items.
