No charges for Wichita officers involved in fatal 2017 shooting

The Sedgwick County district attorney said Friday no charges will be filed against two Wichita police officers who shot and killed a man during a confrontation that led to the death of a police dog.

25-year-old Kevin Perry was killed after officers were called to a domestic disturbance in the 2300 block of East MacArthur in March, 2017.    During the confrontation, Perry fired shots and a police dog, known as Rooster, was killed.

District attorney Marc Bennett said under Kansas law, the officers acted reasonably in defending themselves after Perry fired shots during the incident.   Bennett said it was a tragic result for everyone involved, with the police dog being killed and Perry losing his life.  He said Perry was “obviously a very troubled young man with serious mental health issues and a very troubled drug history.”
