The KBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Salina.

It began with a reported carjacking at a Salina Kwik Shop that happened shortly after 5 p.m.  About 15 minutes following the carjacking, a Salina Police officer spotted the vehicle on Magnolia and began pursuit.

The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Colt Wright, backed up the car and struck the officer’s vehicle, disabling it, and fled the scene in the stolen car.  The officer was not hurt.

Shortly after 5:30, Saline County deputies spotted the suspect and a second chase began.  It lasted just under 30 minutes with Wright firing shots at the deputies as he fled.

Wright eventually crashed the car at Whitmore and Country Club Road.  He got out of the car, armed with his gun and a deputy and Salina Police officer opened fire.

The KBI says a deputy was injured when he was struck in the face by debris from a bullet fired by Wright.  He has been treated and released from the hospital.

Wright was transported to Salina Regional Hospital where he underwent surgery.  His current condition is unknown.

The KBI was brought in to investigate the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure.
