An embattled Kansas military school has announced it plans to close after the conclusion of this school year.

St. John’s Military School announced on its website Wednesday that recent legal issues and a low enrollment resulting from “negative and unfair portrayals in the media” created a deficit it cannot overcome.

The school says it had only been able to stay open due to the generosity of a few donors and its endowment fund.

A $369,175 arbitration award in December against the school and its endowment fund was made public last month.

An arbitrator found the school failed to supervise cadets and inflicted emotional distress on a bullied 11-year-old student who had been tied together with his harasser in public as punishment.

The Salina boarding school has been dogged by litigation.
