A pair of bills in the House and Senate would honor those who died while serving in the Army’s First Infantry Division, “Big Red One.” Lawmakers from Kansas submitted bills in the House and Senate this week to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

“The Fighting First are the true guardians of America’s freedoms,” said Sen. Pat Roberts. “We must honor and remember the brave men and women of the big Red One who in placing duty first, have paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

The bill would authorize the names of fallen soldiers in the Army’s First Infantry Division to be added to the First Division Monument on the grounds of the White House.

Senator Jerry Moran said he is pleased to introduce the bill with Sen. Roberts alongside the companion bill in the House with Rep. Roger Marshall.

“As President Calvin Coolidge stated during his speech at the memorial’s dedication ceremony in 1924, ‘We raise monuments to testify to the honor in which we hold men for the work they have done, and to be a constant reminder to ourselves and future generations of the lessons their actions have taught us,'” Moran said.

Senator Moran said there is no group more worthy of being honored than those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of the nation.

The First Infantry Division was established in 1917 and is headquartered at Fort Riley, Kansas.
