WEDNESDAY MORNING UPDATE:

A winter storm dumped snow on much of Kansas Tuesday night, but no more snow is expected in Wichita outside of a flurry or two Wednesday morning. Parts of Sedgwick County had reports of several inches of snow, but the official snowfall total in Wichita measured 2.1 inches at Eisenhower National Airport.

Goddard got three and a half inches of snow, Mount Hope northwest of Wichita had reports of six inches of snow, six and a half inches of snow was reported in Hutchinson. The heaviest snowfall totals Tuesday were measured in Kingman County at 10 inches.

Many major roads in Wichita are wet or slushy, and side streets may be snow-packed and icy. Most of the city’s 60 snow removal trucks are out plowing or spreading salt and sand on the roads.

The Emergency accident reporting plan is in effect Wednesday. If you are involved in a crash where nobody is hurt, both cars can be safely driven away, and alcohol or drugs are not involved; you can pick up a form to report it instead of calling 911. You can get those forms from a Quik Trip, Kwik Shop or police station. You can also report it online by clicking here.

Some school districts closed Wednesday, but Wichita Public Schools are in session.

Districts including Belle Plaine, Pretty Prairie, Hutchinson are closed. For a complete list of school closings, click here.

ORIGINAL STORY

A winter storm brought snow from northern Oklahoma into southern and central Kansas Tuesday afternoon, and it quickly began to accumulate on roadways around the area.

The city of Wichita has sent out 60 snow plow trucks that will begin putting down a salt and sand mix on the major routes, and then as the snow accumulates the trucks will move to a plowing operation.

Five inches of snow were reported in Harper, in Harper County and a spotter in Kingman reported six inches, with a seven inch report about eight miles south of Kingman.  Hutchinson reported just under five inches.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Reno, Kingman, McPherson, Barton, Rice and Saline counties.   A winter weather advisory continues for Sedgwick, Harvey, Harper, Sumner, Butler, Marion and Chase counties until 6 a.m Wednesday.

Some schools canceled evening activities because of the winter storm.   Derby schools canceled after-school and evening events, and the Hutchinson-Derby high school basketball game was postponed to Thursday.   Valley Center postponed its basketball games with Arkansas City until Friday.
