Sentencing delayed in fatal Wichita “swatting” incident

Sentencing has been delayed for the man who admitted making a false 911 call that led to a fatal police shooting in Wichita.

The sentencing for 26-year-old Tyler Barriss of Los Angeles was scheduled for Friday, but the judge is also presiding over the wire fraud and money laundering trial of Sedgwick County commissioner Michael O’Donnell.  That trial was expected to conclude Friday afternoon with closing arguments and the jury was to begin deliberations.

Judge Eric Melgren has scheduled a new sentencing date of March 29th in federal court in Wichita.   Barriss pleaded guilty in November to 51 charges related to false 911 calls and threats across the country.  He still faces state charges for the December, 2017 “swatting” incident that led to the officer-involved shooting death of 28-year-old Andrew Finch.

Attorneys for Barriss are asking for a 20-year sentence under a plea agreement, while prosecutors are asking for 25 years.
