Youngster still in critical condition following Wednesday crash in southwest Sedgwick County

A 12-year-old boy remains in critical condition at Wesley Medical Center following a crash Wednesday morning in southwest Sedgwick County.

It happened shortly after 7 a.m. at 135th Street West and 71st Street South.  The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s office says a Ford Expedition, driven by a 21-year-old woman, was traveling eastbound on 71st Street, when she failed to stop at the stop sign, and crashed into a Toyota Corolla that was traveling south on 135th.

Inside the Corolla was a 39-year-old woman, 17-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl who was driving the car.  The 12-year-old boy, identified as Caleb Tobias,  was taken to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition for treatment.

The two teens, and the 39-year-old woman were taken to St. Francis.  The 21-year-old woman in the Expedition, along with two girls ages 12 and 5, and two boys ages 14 and 2, were also taken to St. Francis for treatment.

Deputies said the woman driving the Expedition was reportedly distracted right before the crash, but it is still under investigation.
