Wichita State students reject proposal to fund campus improvements

Students at Wichita State University have narrowly defeated a referendum to raise student fees for campus improvements.   The vote on the Shock The Future referendum was 1,681 for and 1,788 against, so the proposal was defeated by 107 votes.

The vote represented 28.4 percent of the students who pay fees and are working toward degrees from Wichita State.

The proposal would have raised $38.5 million to help construct a new business school building and fund other campus projects.  The university said in a press release that the next step will be to look for alternative student funding for the business building, which is already 60 percent funded through donor gifts.   The university will reassess the overall package of improvements that were planned under the Shock The Future program.   Acting WSU president Richard Muma said changes are needed on campus and the university will continue to look for ways to make them happen in the future.
