A Wichita police officer who was checking on a burglary-in-progress call was injured when he was attacked by a pit bull.   The officer was checking on a 911 call from a home in the 4400 block of East Boston, in the Hilltop neighborhood.

A tenant reported hearing strange noises around 7:45 Tuesday morning, and after answering the door to meet with two officers, a pit bull ran out of the home and bit one of the officers on the leg.   The officer suffered a laceration requiring stitches and a possible knee sprain.

The second officer fired a shot with his handgun, and the dog was hit.  The dog ran from the home but an animal control officer later found it and took it to an emergency veterinarian for medical care.    The tenant was unable to provide vaccination records for the dog, so it will have to be quarantined for ten days.

No arrests have been made and officers did not find evidence of a break-in.
