Star Spangled Salute: A Marine Returns Home To Kansas City 76 Years Later

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors US Marine veteran Nicholas Gojmerac.  PFC Gojmerac was part of the Marine Raiders, an elite amphibious assault group that operated behind enemy lines during World War II.  According to military records, Nicholas saw one of his fellow soldiers injured in a wall of fire and Nicholas crawled out under extremely heavy gun fire, gave first aid and dragged him to safety.   Nicholas was badly wounded, eventually went MIA and ultimately was listed KIA.  For his bravery he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart.   Fast forward to now and after a search by his family that has lasted decades, his remains were located and in April they will be flown back home to Kansas  City.   He will be buried with full military honors at Leavenworth National Cemetery.  Thank you Nicholas for your bravery and your ultimate sacrifice for your fellow man and your country.
