Star Spangled Salute: A Pearl Harbor Veteran Passes

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors 96-year old Dorwin Lamkin of Overland Park, Kansas.  Dorwin joined the Navy at the age of 18 and was serving as a corpsman in Pearl Harbor on the USS Nevada on December 7th, 1941 when the Japanese attacked.  Dorwin survived, was transferred to the USS San Francisco during the height of the Pacific campaign and saw several battles including Iwo Jima, Okinawa and the Marshall Islands.  Dorwin was the driving force behind the creation of the Pearl Harbor Memorial Park in Mission.  He died Sunday, and is believed to be the last Kansas City-area resident to survive the attack on Pearl Harbor.  Thank you Dorwin for your service.
