The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation of a double shooting in Montgomery County.
It happened shortly after 3:30 Monday afternoon inside the G&W Foods grocery store in Cherryvale. The Cherryvale Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kansas Highway Patrol were called to the store on the report of man with a gun inside. When they arrived, they learned that a 28-year-old man was holding a 39-year-old coworker hostage inside the store office.
The employees and customers were evacuated and moments later, shots were heard coming from the office. Officers went inside and saw the 28-year-old suspect, identified as Jamal Brown of Independence, shoot himself. Brown died later at a Tulsa, Oklahoma hospital. The 39-year-old coworker, who is also from Independence, had been shot several times and he was in fair condition at a hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
No other details have been released.
