Governor calls on Kansas Senate to vote on Medicaid expansion

Governor Laura Kelly is calling on the Kansas Senate to vote on a House bill for Medicaid expansion, and she accused Senate leadership of stalling tactics.

The governor said a bipartisan coalition in the House approved an expansion bill last month, and she said she’s disappointed in Senate leaders for blocking the debate and the committee process.  She said expansion is the best path forward for Kansas, and it would bring economic benefits and support for rural hospitals.

Senate president Susan Wagle of Wichita said in response that the House bill would just expand a broken system.  She said costs for health care have increased under the Affordable Care Act and she has met with leaders of other states who have regretted expanding Medicaid.   Wagle said an expansion would mean higher taxes for Kansas.   She’s calling for an interim committee to look at health care and bring back a plan next year that will be affordable.
