A Wichita man has been sentenced to almost ten years in prison for a fatal crash near Derby in August of 2017.
24-year-old Joe Ellis was convicted by a jury in February of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated battery. He was sentenced Friday to 109 months in prison.
Prosecutors said Ellis was driving at a high rate of speed when he ran a stop sign at K-15 and 55th Street South. His car hit a southbound pickup driven by Thomas Toon of Burden. Toon survived his injuries but a passenger in Ellis’ car, 33-year-old Mark Standerfer of Mulvane, died later at a hospital.
Prosecutors said Ellis had methamphetamine in his bloodstream at the time of the crash.
