Patient Advocates Upset with Passage of Farm Bureau Health Plans

Patient advocacy organizations are disappointed that Governor Laura Kelly allowed the passage of house bill 2209, which would allow the Kansas Farm Bureau to offer health insurance plans that are exempt from state and federal regulation. Organizations including the American Heart Association, American Lung Association, March of Dimes, Ascension Via Christi, and the American Cancer Society are concerned the bill will allow a number of dangerous health provisions, including discrimination against people with pre-existing health conditions. “Without regulation and accountability, those plans may ignore the coverages most Kansans have come to expect and rely upon when needed most,” the group wrote in a public statement Tuesday. The President of the Farm Bureau, Rich Felts, thought Governor Kelly did not veto the bill in order to gain more compromise on Medicaid expansion. Currently the state legislature, which is controlled by Republicans, has failed to pass Medicaid expansion, which would provide health coverage to 150,000 Kansans.
