Wichita man sentenced in gambling probe

A Wichita man has been sentenced to two years of federal probation in connection to an illegal gambling probe.

48-year-old Daven Flax pleaded guilty to two counts of illegal gambling and one count of making a false tax statement.  The US Attorney’s Office says in his plea, he admitted to operating an illegal gambling business in Wichita, managing poker games at numerous locations in Wichita.

He was responsible for paying the employees of the operation and for paying for the use of the builings that were being used.  Flax made money by taking a cut from the amount of money wagered.

All of the games were private and only those who were invited could play.  Flax also admitted to working for his co-defendant Danny Chapman’s sports betting operation as a sub-bookie.

Flax reportedly failed to pay income tax on $346,000 earned from illegal gambling.  In addition to probation, he was ordered to pay $117,000 in restitution.

The case was investigated by the FBI, Wichita Police, and the IRS.
