Kansas senator Pat Roberts attended a ceremony in France to observe the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Europe during World War II.   The ceremony was held at the American Cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer near Normandy.

Allied forces led by Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6th, 1944 in an invasion known as Operation Overlord.  It was a joint naval, air and land assault marking the start of the Allied campaign to liberate Nazi-occupied Europe.

Roberts said in a press release that as a Marine, he was honored to visit Normandy and pay tribute to the service members who lost their lives in the D-Day operation.   Roberts said he’s thankful for Eisenhower’s leadership in France 75 years ago, and he is looking forward to dedicating the Eisenhower Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. next year.  The dedication is scheduled on the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
