Wichita man sentenced for attack on police officer

A Wichita man will spend over four years in prison for attacking a police officer with a knife during an incident last year.

54-year-old Darren Hutcherson pleaded guilty in March to aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and interference with law enforcement.   A Sedgwick County judge sentenced Hutcherson on Friday to 51 months in prison.

Prosecutors said police were called to the Union Rescue Mission on North Hillside in October, 2018 to take Hutcherson into custody on a warrant from the state corrections department.  In the dining hall, officers told Hutcherson to put down a knife and put his hands behind his back, but he lunged at an officer, striking him in the upper chest.  The knife struck the officer’s ballistic vest and the officer was not hurt.
