The Wichita Public Library will again participate in the annual Big Read program from the National Endowment for the Arts.  The library has been chosen to receive one of 78 grants for the national program.

This year’s featured book is Lab Girl by Hope Jahren.  It’s a memoir about her life as a geobiologist living with bipolar disorder and how she finds beauty in nature and science.   Julie Sherwood, partnership and community engagement manager for the Wichita Public Library, said there will be a schedule of programs relating to science, culture and the arts in connection with The Big Read.

A kickoff party will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 28th at the Advanced Learning Library.   Events are planned from October 1st through November 15th.

Honorary co-chairs for The 2019 Big Read will be Wichita mayor Jeff Longwell, lieutenant governor Lynn Rogers, and Susan Estes, wife of Congressman Ron Estes.
