Sedgwick County deputy’s family receives award in his honor

The family of a Sedgwick County deputy who was killed in the line of duty has received an award in his honor.

Deputy Robert Kunze was named as the recipient of the Charles “Bud” Meeks Award as Deputy Sheriff of the Year for Valor.    Deputy Kunze’s wife and daughter accepted the award Monday during a ceremony in Louisville, Kentucky.  The award was presented at the annual conference of the National Sheriffs’ Association.

Kunze was killed in a confrontation with a suspect who was also killed.   That happened at an intersection in western Sedgwick County in September, 2018.

The award is presented to a deputy who has made outstanding contributions to law enforcement or has demonstrated conspicuous bravery in the line of duty.  The award is named in honor of Sheriff Bud Meeks of Allen County, Indiana, who was a previous executive director of the National Sheriffs’ Association.
