A Wichita man has been sentenced to almost 49 years in prison for the death of his girlfriend’s son last year.
26-year-old Lucas Diel was sentenced to 586 months in prison after pleading guilty to second degree murder in May. He was charged in the May, 2018 death of 2-year-old Anthony Bunn. Officers found the boy at a home in the Riverside neighborhood, and he had injuries to his head and face. Anthony died several days later in a hospital.
Bunn apologized in court on Tuesday and said he takes full responsibility for what happened. Family members read a statement of their grief over Anthony’s death and they called for the longest possible sentence for Diel.
The boy’s mother, 23-year-old Elizabeth Woolheater, is scheduled for trial in September.
