Sedgwick County looking to boost 911, senior services in 2020

Sedgwick County will be looking to add positions to Comcare and the 911 system next year, under a proposed budget that was presented to county commissioners Wednesday.  The budget totals $457.4 million, with $437.3 million for general government operations and $20.1 million for the fire district.

County manager Tom Stolz said the budget is looking to add six full-time positions to the community crisis group in Comcare to meet rising demand, and there is also a provision for increased security for children’s services at a facility at Broadway and Waterman in Wichita.

Stolz is also recommending increased funding for nutrition programs for seniors in rural areas, and some additional funding for services at the senior centers.  His budget also includes an additional full-time position to deal with rising demand.    Stolz said there will also be a comprehensive study of services in the aging department to look at future needs for an aging population.

The budget also includes three full-time positions in the 911 system, and increased funding for maintenance of the outdoor warning system for Emergency Management.

Stolz said the county budget has historically had contingency funding to provide ambulance services for Clearwater, and that funding will be needed in 2020.  Clearwater city council members voted last month to end ambulance service for the community.   Stolz is asking for additional funding to provide EMS services for the Clearwater area.

The proposed budget also includes funding for the Election Commissioner’s office to create a new satellite voting location in Park City.

County commissioners will have public hearings on the budget on July 24th and August 5th, before a vote is taken on final adoption of a 2020 budget.   An online forum will also be available through the county’s web site at www.sedgwickcounty.org
