Sedgwick County ends investigations into commission actions

With a unanimous vote, Sedgwick County commissioners have decided not to move forward with any further investigations into county leadership and commission decisions.

Questions were raised last fall about personnel issues and the tensions led to the commission putting then-county-counselor Eric Yost on paid administrative leave.  Yost later resigned and then-county-manager Michael Scholes submitted his resignation afterward.   The commission approved settlement agreements with Yost and Scholes to end their employment by the county.

Interim county counselor Mike Pepoon said there was an independent review of county leadership last fall, and that investigation took about three weeks at a cost of $89,000.  There were also FBI investigations, and Pepoon said there is no reason to believe there are any further investigations related to allegations from former commissioner Richard Ranzau.    The district attorney’s office conducted an investigation into possible violations of open meetings laws, and Pepoon said no evidence was found to indicate there were any violations.

Pepoon asked for further direction from the commission on Wednesday, and commissioner Pete Meitzner moved to end the investigation.  That was approved on a 5-0 vote.

Dennis said the county has moved past the difficulties from last year, and he said the commission and county staff are focused on providing services to county residents.
