Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors veteran “Uncle” Everett Hyland. Everett said that if we ever went to war the last place he wanted to be was in the bowels of a ship so he volunteered for antenna repair squad in the radio division. On December 7th, 1941 Everett was on board the battleship USS Pennsylvania when the Japanese attacked and he immediately reported to battle stations. He started gathering ammo for a 3-inch 50-caliber anti aircraft gun when the Pennsylvania was hit. Everett suffered a multitude of injuries, spent 9 months in recovery and then went back to sea. Since 1995, “Uncle Ev” as he was known, volunteered at the Pearl Harbor visitors center sharing his stories with visitors. A few days ago, Everett passed away at the age of 95. Thank you for your service Everett.
