Kansas plans tough sales tax for online sales

Story by Associated Press.

Kansas is making a push toward getting more people to pay taxes when they buy stuff online – and its move, many experts say, is the nation’s most aggressive policy for collecting tax on online sales.

The Kansas Department of Revenue has put out the word that any “remote seller” doing business with Kansas residents must register with the department, collect state and local sales taxes and send that money to the state.

The new rules go into effect Oct. 1. In formulating the new rules, Kansas officials cite a U.S. Supreme Court decision last year that allows states to collect sales taxes on Internet sales. Most states have policies to collect such taxes but groups that track such laws say nearly all states set minimum annual sales or transaction thresholds to exempt small businesses. The Kansas law does away with such exemptions.
