Lake Afton is now under an algae warning

Kansas health officials have now included Lake Afton in Sedgwick County on a list of lakes under a warning because of the presence of blue-green algae.

The list also includes Camp Hawk Lake in Harvey County and the Marion County Lake.  There are 14 lakes with warnings and eight others are under a watch.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said a warning means that the lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.  People should avoid contact with the water and any fish caught from the lake should be rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion should be consumed.    People are urged to avoid areas of visible algae accumulation and if they come in contact with lake water, they should wash with clean water as soon as possible.
