A jury has found a man guilty for a crash in May of last year that critically injured a local MMA fighter.
Carmella James, a mixed martial artist, was riding a bicycle on May 22, 2018 on Rock Road near Derby, when she was struck by a minivan driven by Larry Gaines. He was arrested on charges of aggravated battery; DUI causing great bodily harm/disfigurement and DUI 4th or more.
Gaines blood was tested 3 hours after the crash that injured James and it still registered 3 times the legal limit. A Sedgwick County jury found him guilty of aggravated battery, causing bodily harm and driving under the influence.
Sentencing is scheduled for September 24.
