Contraband was uncovered during a large-scale search of the Sedgwick County Jail Thursday.
Undersheriff Brian White says 100 detention deputies searched all 20 detention pods, including 1,158 jail beds, and 1,164 jail inmates. 3 makeshift knives, commonly referred to as “shivs” or “shanks,” and a metal electrical plug plate that was being fashioned into a knife were found.
White says over the past 4 months, detention deputies have seen an increase in dangerous weapons during routine searches. Investigators with the sheriff’s office will gather evidence in connection to the found contraband and will turn the cases over to the district attorney’s office to decide on any charges.
The inmates could also face disciplinary action.
