Kansas will be transferring some prisoners to an Arizona private prison to help deal with overcrowding.

The Kansas Department of Corrections has announced that they have signed a 1-year contract with Nashville-base CoreCivic.  Under the agreement, CoreCivic could house up to 600 inmates.

360 inmates will be moved in groups of 120 between now and the end of December.

“Sending Kansas inmates to another state is an option we wish we could avoid,” Acting Secretary Jeff Zmuda said in a news release. “Entering into this contract to accommodate growth in the prison population is the best option available at this time for the safety of our staff and inmates.”

CoreCivic will pay for the transportation costs of moving inmates between Kansas and Arizona.  It will also be providing video visitation free of charge to inmates.  A copy of the contract will be available to view online on August 10.
